PHTA Tennis Singles Ladder 2010
This singles ladder is open to ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, and runs from April 12th until December 5th. Matches can be played at any venue within 15 miles of Maidstone town centre. You play when, where and as often as you like. The entry fee is £25 for adults, £15 for under 18’s. Depending where you play, there is likely to be court hire & floodlight fees. However, from 1800 – 2200 hours on every first Sunday of the month, you may book a court with floodlights at PHTA free of charge for your singles ladder matches. This is an opportunity for tennis players to play singles matches using the normal yellow ball against different players, and see how far up the ladder they can climb. The higher the better. A list of opponents with telephone numbers will appear on the website under ‘Competitions’ followed by ‘Singles Ladder’, after 12th April. An extra free court hire evening on Sunday 25th April will follow, so challenge an opponent quickly. At the end of the year, a prize will be awarded to the highest placed player, lady, and junior, provided these winners have played a minimum of 6 matches. To be included on the ladder you must inform Alex on 01622 743630 with your contact number, email address, approximate standard and £25 or £15 entry fee. Cheques made payable to ‘PHTA’ thank you. Please read the following rules if you wish to take part, and entries by post should be sent to Alex Brown at
32 Amsbury Road, Coxheath, Maidstone, Kent ME17 4DP
- Find your name on the Singles Ladder at www.phtennis.co.uk.
- Select an opponent up to 5 positions higher (or lower) whom you wish to challenge. Position 12 can challenge position 7, but not 6.
- Telephone him/her to challenge, & arrange a date & time within the next 10 days.
- You have to accept a challenge, unless you are already due to play someone, by having already challenged, or been challenged.
- You can refuse a challenge, if the challenger played you in his last ladder match.
- If you cannot organise a match day within 10 days, then please challenge someone else, or allow yourself to be challenged by another player.
- Each match is played for 1 hour including a 5 minute warm up period.
- After 1 hour (agreeing the exact stopping time before play commences), finish the game you are currently playing if you have started, and the player who is leading overall in games is the winner.
- You play only games, not sets! 3 example scores being 9-5; 14–3; 10-9.
- In the event of games being equal, the lower player on the ladder is the victor.
- If the lower player wins, the 2 players’ positions on the ladder are swopped.
- Inform the referee of all results, not just when ladder positions require swopping.
- Please report any problems encountered on or off the court, to the referee.
- You can only play outside a 15 mile radius of Maidstone or indoors, if both players agree. Any court hire or floodlight fees are shared.
- The ‘challenged’ player receiving the initial telephone call, must provide at least 3 ‘decent’ tennis balls, for the match.
- Try to agree on the earliest possible match date, as all other challenges cannot be accepted until that match has been played.
- The singles ladder referee reserves the right to disqualify any player causing problems or not playing matches without good reason, and to promote or relegate players on the ladder where this is appropriate based on playing standard.
- The referee’s decision on all disputes and rules is final.
